VolunteerAdvice & Information

The Children in Care Council (CHICC) is run by young people in care and care leavers in Hertfordshire. Its aim is to listen to the views of young people and help make being in care better. It's also a great way to meet other young people in care and have some fun, with lots of activities and events throughout the year. We also have four meetings a year with the senior managers so you can help shape the services that you use. Anyone in care is automatically a member of the CHICC and should be given information about how you can get involved. If you need more information or want to join one of our meetings, please get in touch with the Participation Team on 07776 171298.

The Children in Care Council (CHICC) was created to give the young people in care a chance to influence the services they use and make being in care better. It's run by young people in care, for young people in care. Anyone in care is automatically a member and can join the council.

The CHICC has three main groups:

Junior CHICC

This is for young people in care aged 7 - 11 years. It's all about having fun and meeting other young people in care! We do things like trips to the zoo, soft play sessions, arts and crafts, and much more. Sometimes we discuss things to do with being in care and how we can make it better. You can choose to continue on and become a leading volunteer with the Deputies. This group meets at half terms and during the holidays.

The Deputies

This is the leading group for the CHICC. The Deputies are aged 12 - 18 and help run our events. You'll be talking to other young people to find out their views about being in care and plan events for young people in care. You decide what the CHICC should do each year and help put those plans in action. The Deputies meet every month and attend the senior managers meetings four times a year.

Care Leavers Group

This group represents the views of care leavers from 18 and up. We meet once a month and discuss issues to do with leaving care. It's all about ensuring that young people are supported through transition to adulthood. You'll be running the annual event for care leavers and finding out the views of care leavers to participate in the senior managers meetings.

The CHICC Deputies and Care Leavers meet with the senior managers in Children's Services who have most responsibility for the young people in care. We have four sessions each year. The meetings are important as they listen to the views of young people and see if there's anything that needs changing or improving. We talk about all kinds of things to do with being in care like:

  • how easy is it to contact social workers?
  • how do young people feel about their reviews?
  • what are contact centres like?
  • how well do young people feel supported as they reach adulthood?

The senior managers will take away a list of actions they need to do and we'll check they're doing their actions at the next meeting.

If you want to get involved with any of the CHICC groups then please get in touch. This council is for you so you can improve the things that matter.

Contact the Participation Team on 07776 171298 for details of the next meeting and how to join.
